Central Council for Laboratory Animal Experimentation
The animal house in Madras Medical College is as per the ICMR - Guidelines for use of Laboratory Animals in Medical Colleges in India and the Guidelines of the Central Council for Laboratory Animal Experimentation (CPCSEA):
• Sections
The animal house should have separate sections for storage, animal stock, experiments, disposal, clean corridors, washing, and quarantine
• Temperature and humidity
The temperature should be between 25° ± 2°C throughout the year, but can vary between 18° and 29°C. The relative humidity should be between 45% and 55% throughout the year, but can vary between 30% and 70%. During extreme summers, larger animals should be kept in a comfortable zone of 18° to 37°C.
• Floors and walls:
Floors should be smooth, non-absorbent, and skid-proof. Walls and ceilings should be free of cracks.
• Animal health:
A veterinarian should regularly monitor the health of the animals.
• Waste disposal :
Investigators should dispose of bio-wastes and sharp objects according to CPCSEA guidelines.
• Drugs :
Investigators can store drugs intended for daily dosing in the animal house refrigerator, but must log the drugs in a book.
• Consumables :
Investigators should arrange for any necessary consumables themselves.
