DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACOLOGY
Pharmacology is often described as a bridge science because it incorporates knowledge and skills from a number of basic science disciplines including physiology, Cellular and molecular biology. Pharmacology involves the study and description of the drugs and their effect on whole body system. Pharmacologist are able to translate such knowledge into the rational development of therapeutics. Pharmacology upholds the major role in bringing the drug into the market by the means of clinical trials. Department of pharmacology offers training in Pharmacology and toxicology to undergraduate and post graduate students. Department of Pharmacology is committed to achieve and to be strive for excellence in teaching and research. Apart from teaching also includes the interactive modules in pharmacy, demonstration exercises in experimental pharmacology software, Group discussion on clinical oriented problems, drug display and seminars related to pharmacology. This pharmacological study involves analysing the problems associated with the drugs used for various diseases.
Pharmacological field encompasses drug composition, drug design, molecular diagnostics, medical applications, etc. It revolves around the mechanism of drug action, pharmacological action, and adverse effects and also therapeutic approach in management of various diseases. Toxicity studies on animals and Pharmacological screening of various drugs can be performed by conducting experiments on animals and bioassays on isolated tissues. The students will acquire knowledge on Anatomy of human body, physiological functions and pathophysiological condition in human body. The goal of pharmacology department is to prepare the students for successful Carrier in industry, academics research, pharmacovigilance etc.

DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACOGNOSY
The field of Pharmacognosy plays an inevitable role in the Pharmacy curriculum as it provides a systematic and scientific validation of traditional medicines. Pharmacognostical standardisation helps to develop lead molecules from natural sources and to establish the Pharmacological and biochemical roles of these molecules. Though the traditional medicine provides a gold mine for alleviating diseases, there is a lacuna in the availability of standard preparations. Hence there is an urgent need to standardize herbal preparations which is a major area of research. Pharmacognosy has undergone significant changes in recent years and today it substantiates as an interdisciplinary science. The subject seeks to bridge the gap between modern and traditional systems of medicine.
Pharmacognosy lab of College of Pharmacy Madras Medical College is well equipped with spacious laboratories to train UG and PG students, with facilities for extraction, isolation and identification of phytopharmaceuticals. The instruments which are available in the Department are UV Spectroscopy, Stability Chamber, Rotary vaccum evaporator, Trinocular microscope with digital camera, Rotary microtome, Electric centrifuge, Muffle furnace, Volatile oil distillation apparatus etc.,
